Legislative Update from Rep. Iler — January 13, 2025
Last week in Raleigh we participated in the organization of the 2025 – 2026 North Carolina General Assembly. On Wednesday the 8th we met at noon so that those who had been elected to the N.C. House of Representatives and Senate in November could be sworn into office. We also elected a new Speaker of the House and Speaker Pro Tempore while the Senate was electing their new officers. New seat assignments had been made, but the Speaker will be working on committee assignments.
Associate Supreme Court Justice Tamara Barringer recited the oath to which we responded and became official members of the House chamber for 2025 – 2026. The House Principal Clerk acts as Speaker until the Speaker is elected. The name of Representative Destin Hall of Caldwell County was placed in nomination. There being no other nominations, a motion to elect him by acclamation was made and passed without opposition. Taking the Speaker’s oath and then the gavel, Rep. Hall presided over the election of Speaker Pro Tem, Rep. Mitchell Setzer of Catawba County, again by acclamation. We then re-elected the Principal Clerk James White, who has been doing an outstanding job.
Temporary House rules were adopted (House Resolution 1) and we adjourned to return on January 29th at noon. We will undoubtedly have possible committee meetings and research for bill drafts in the meantime. I have several meetings planned across the district during this time for input on future bills and budget needs, as I work on priorities for the new session.
The seating assignments were changed due to members having left and new members elected. I moved from seat 4 to seat 3. This is based on seniority of time in the House, except for a few senior members who decided not to change seats.
Our office phone number and location remain the same. My Legislative Assistant and I are at #639 on the 6th floor of the Legislative Office Building, 300 N. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC. (Our Legislative Assistant, Carla Langdon, has worked for 3 representatives, including 20 years involvement with Brunswick County with my predecessor, Bonner Stiller and myself). Her loyalty and helpfulness to our citizens is well known.
We are all looking forward to a good productive new year, a new state budget, and bills to improve some of our state statutes.
