Legislative Update from Rep. Iler — May 21, 2024

Last week at the North Carolina General Assembly was filled with committee meetings, more budget work, and visitors from around the state.  We started early in the week, put in some long hours, and were able to return home by Thursday for meetings in the district.

Our floor sessions were brief, and most of the House activity was in the Finance Committee, Judiciary Committees, and the Local Government Committee.  Several bills I had introduced were not heard in committees last week, but are still having amendments considered for changes in the coming weeks.

Two significant bills came to the House floor.  House Bill 10 – Require Sheriffs to Cooperate with ICE would address the few county sheriffs who are not notifying ICE when they have an illegal alien who has been arrested for a crime, but releasing them back onto the streets.  We voted to Not Concur with the version sent over from the Senate by a vote of 108 – 3, and a conference committee was appointed to work out the differences.  House Bill 912 – 2024 UNC Self-liquidating Capital Projects passed 110 – 1 and was calendared for a second vote this week.

The senior appropriation chairs from the House and Senate were hearing the area budgets from the area appropriation chairs early in the week.  We on the transportation area committee presented our budget changes on Tuesday.  We anticipate final negotiations soon and a 2024 – 2025 budget in June.  The fiscal year starts July 1st.

It was good to see various groups from back home visiting us in Raleigh.  In particular, our firemen, including Chiefs from Sunset Beach and Leland came by the office.  Later the board members and CEO of Brunswick Electric (BEMC) met with our regional delegation at dinner, including Rep. Miller, Sen. Rabon, and me.

We expect a similar week this week with committees and floor votes.
