Legislative Update from Rep. Iler — January 15, 2024
Last week at the North Carolina General Assembly was relatively quiet. The short session will begin shortly after the March 5th primary election. However, there are select committees and oversight committees meeting during this interim period.
We held the first meeting of the House Select Committee on Homeowners Associations on Thursday in Raleigh. As a Co-Chair, I chaired that meeting. We heard presentations from the public and other stakeholders. At least ten speakers presented information from various groups of concerned homeowners about their issues. We had a speaker representing the Community Associations Institute (CAI) and one representing the N.C. Attorney General’s office. We also have written material that was submitted during the meeting. In addition, many emails and materials have come to our offices from outside the committee format. This was the first of several meetings during January and February, as we are required to report back to the House by March 1st. The next meeting is planned for Wednesday, January 24th, and will be chaired by our other Co-Chair, Representative Steve Tyson.
I have also been appointed Co-Chair of the Joint Legislative Transportation Oversight Committee (JLTOC). A meeting has not yet been scheduled, but I anticipate one soon.
This week there are scheduled sessions of the House and Senate on Wednesday. These are administrative sessions without votes. I plan to be in Brunswick County at various meetings
I hope your MLK Day brought back memories of this icon of American history that went through so much to peacefully protest and bring us into a better place among the races, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
