Legislative Update from Rep. Frank Iler – February 7, 2017
Last week in the North Carolina House of Representatives we had sessions on the House floor four days, read in bills, but took no votes and had our first group of House pages on duty.
The first full week in the 2017 session began with no votes on the House floor. Bills were being read onto the floor and sent to various committees. Our Transportation Committee received six bills, and will be meeting this Tuesday to consider, debate, and vote on at least four of them. We should be able to hold floor votes on them this week. Other committees on which I sit may be meeting also. I expect the Education K-12 Committee will be meeting.
Many of the House and Senate members are working on bills, both local and statewide to be introduced over the next few weeks. Many of us have them on our desks for final changes and recruiting of other sponsors before introducing them. Usually, in the long session, each chamber introduces over 1000 bills.
We had our first group of pages last week. I was pleased to have a relative of mine from Union County, Logan Turner, paging in the House. I usually sponsor pages from here in Brunswick County. If your high school age student would like to be a page in the N.C. House, please apply through my Legislative Assistant Carla Langdon in Raleigh at [email protected]. It involves four days, Monday – Thursday and can be very educational on how our government works, as well as North Carolina history. However, with 120 House members, the page spots are limited.
Readers will notice this is a very short article, due to the light activity in the first full week. I will also have more information on specific bills in most of my articles as they are introduced and make their way through the process.
