State Representative Frank Iler issues statement following education policy announcement by Gov. McCrory, Lt. Gov. Forest and legislative leaders

OAK ISLAND, N.C. – State Representative Frank Iler (R-Brunswick) released the following statement following today’s major education policy announcement by Governor Pat McCrory, Lt. Governor Dan Forest, N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis and N.C. Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger:

“I am very pleased with new policy initiatives outlined in today’s announcement.  They are in line with conversations I have been having with our classroom teachers here in Brunswick County over the past few months.

“Since last September, I have been visiting classrooms in virtually every school in the Brunswick County School District.  I have observed a classroom in each school for about half a day and interviewed the teacher to get their thoughts on key issues.  Just last week, we formed a committee so that a dozen of these same classroom teachers could continue our conversation and, in turn, provide me with insights as we craft education policy in advance of the short session in May.  We did not publicize the fact that I was spending time in classrooms because it was not about publicity – it was about getting direct, unfiltered feedback from our teachers. This direct, one-on-one feedback from our classroom teachers has been extremely valuable in helping me understand the impact of our policies on our local classrooms and our most precious assets: our children.

“Some of the issues our teachers discussed include the Masters Degree incentive, the Teaching Fellows program to attract our best and brightest, teacher pay levels, and the impact of Common Core on their classroom.  We also talked about the support they get from parents and the community, and what they would like me to know as we go back to Raleigh.  The answers were very diverse, as each teacher shared their own emphasis, experience and perspective on these subjects.

“I was able to immediately take some of these ideas to Raleigh last week to a conference on Education prior to the Governor’s announcement.  Some of the issues are being addressed, but there is much to be done over the next few months and years to gain our teachers the respect and rewards they deserve.”
